In order for the zinc to bond to the steel, the surface must be carefully prepared by sandblasting. This removes all traces of rust and paint and provides a rough surface for the zinc to adhere to.
Once the surface has been cleaned, a layer of 95.3% pure zinc metal is applied to the the desired thinkness. (The thicker the zinc, the longer the protection against rust).
Once the zinc has been applied, the surface can be painted. When properly applied, paint can double the life of the galvanizing. That's because the paint has to be compromised before the zinc starts to oxidize. But since the paint isn't applied directly to the steel, rust can't get under it and cause it to peel away. Even if the paint is chipped, the zinc remains and prevents rust.
