There's no question that hot-dip galvanizing beats paint or other "preventatives" at fighting rust (the oxizidization of iron) on steel. The secret is the high-tech sacrificial metal zinc. When steel is covered in zinc, the zinc oxidizes first, but at a slower rate, preventing the steel from rusting.
The process for hot-dip galvanizing is simple. The object to be hot-dipped is first etched in an acid ("pickled") and then dunked in a tank of molten zinc. The zinc adheres to the metal and protects it from rust.
The problem is that some things are down-right difficult to dip into a tank of molten zinc. Because of the large equipment they use, hot-dip facilties can also be hard to find or hard to afford for small projects. Portable Galvanizing specializes in providing the protection of galvanizing to everything that rusts, large or small, in place or in our shop.
Here are some of things we can successfully galvanize:
Structural steel in manufacturing and food-processing plants
Boat trailers
Automobiles
Steel hand-rails
Columns and beams (even in the hard to reach joints)
Decks from the open underneath
Bridges
Stairs
Restore rare original parts and re-apply decorative chrome.
We aren't limited to zinc, either. We can also apply pure aluminum, zinc-aluminum blends, brass, etc for:
Aluminizing automotive exhaust headers
Decorative applications like signs
Insides of boats
Small parts for molds
Complies with ASTM Standard B 695 for Mechanical Deposition of Plain Zinc (see B 695 and appendices X1 - X3)
Can be used for repair of damaged and/or uncoated areas of galvanizing in accordance with ASTM Standard A 780
We have engineered our equipment to be compact (24" x 24" x 24") and relatively lightweight at 155 pounds
Even though the process involves spraying pure molten zinc, our equipment has been to designed to minimize temperature at the application surface, generally below 120o F. This prevents warping and allows metal coatings to be applied to unconventional surfaces like PVC and Fiberglass. We can even apply decorative chrome to fiberglass.
